Happy Feast of the Epiphany

“There came Magi from the East to Jerusalem, saying,
‘Where is the newly born King of the Jews?
We have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him'” (Gospel)

Epiphany means “an apparition, or manifestation” of God becoming visible to the Gentile world. Today Jesus manifests a new “kingdom” (Introit), to which the starlight of “faith” guides all wise men (Prayer).

The Epistle is a revealing picture of the “darkness” of the Jewish Old Testament; a prophecy also of the “brightness” of Christ shining in a world where men may now “see.”

The Gospel tells of the faith of the “Magi” divinely guided by the ‘star”; how this faith manifested itself in action by their seeking instruction from God’s priests, by prostrating their very beings and offering their best treasures before the frail Babe in Mary’s arms: GOLD in homage to His new Kingship, symbol of their hearts offering love; INCENSE in home to His Divinity, symbol of their minds offering adoration; MYRRH in homage to His Humanity, symbol of their bodies offering to do penance.

A truly great Feast! “Arise, be enlightened”(Epistle).

Novena to Our Lady Undoer of Knots – Day 5

1. Make the sign of the cross.

2. Say the Act of Contrition. Ask pardon for your sins and make a firm promise not to commit them again.

“Oh my God I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell. But most of all, because I offended Thee, oh my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen”

3. Say the first 3 decades of the Rosary.

4. Make the meditation of the day:

“Mother, Undoer of Knots, generous and compassionate, we come to You today to once again entrust this knot…in the lives of our holy priests to you and to ask the divine wisdom to undo, under the light of the Holy Spirit, this snarl of problems. No one ever saw you angry; to the contrary, your words were so charged with sweetness that the Holy Spirit was manifested on your lips. Take away from them the bitterness, anger and hatred which this knot has caused them. Give them, o dearest Mother, some of the sweetness and wisdom that is all silently reflected in your heart. And just as you were present at Pentecost, ask Jesus to send them a new presence of the Holy Spirit at this moment in their lives. Holy Spirit, come upon them!

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for our Holy Priests.

Mary, with God, is powerful.”

5. Say the last 2 decades of the rosary

6. Finish with the Prayer to Our Lady the Undoer of Knots:“Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exists in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon your holy priests and see the snarl of knots that exist in their lives. You know very well how desperate they are, their pain and how they are bound by these knots.

Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children, we entrust into your hands the ribbon of their lives.
No one, not even the Evil One himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone.

Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and Our Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot…we beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all, You are their hope.

O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives them, the fortification of their feeble strength, the enrichment of their destitution and with Christ the freedom from their chains.

Hear our plea for our Holy Priests whom we love so much because they are Christ on earth.
Keep them, guide them, protect them, o safe refuge!

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for them!

Along with you, dearest Mother, may they see these stones as friends. Not murmuring against them anymore but giving endless thanks for them, may they smile trustingly in your power.

Brother Francis: The Bread of Life {Catholic Children’s DVDs}

If you missed my review on Brother Francis: Let’s Pray, here’s the link!  Today I’d like to help promote another wonderful DVD by Herald Entertainment, Brother Francis: The Bread of Life (the Eucharist)!  It was a perfect addition to our family as our son is preparing for First Confession and First Communion.  In this in-depth DVD Brother Francis makes great comparisons and explanations about the importance of Christ in the Holy Eucharist yet he does this so simply and clearly that even my five and three year old understood!  I did tell you in my first review how much my children love Brother Francis right?  They ask for these DVD all the time! Particularly this one because they love the story of Saint Imelda!  They sing the catchy tunes as well.  I’m totally in love with him too, he’s funny and smart, and athletic, a real ‘super hero’ of sorts that any mommy would  want their kids to love as well!

Honestly, this DVD is jammed packed with so much:
1. the parable of the fruit and the vine
2. the Last Supper
3. about Saint Imelda and the Miracle of the Eucharist
4. staying healthy both body and soul

Here’s a great little preview to just give you a taste of this wonderful DVD:

This really is a fantastic addition to our family DVD library.  I love it and the coloring and activity book we received in addition to the DVD, lots of beautiful pictures to color and activities to do.  LOVELY!  I seriously think this would make a perfect First Communion gift for any child!  I wish I had this for my eldest, but feel super blessed that now my four smaller kids will get to grow up with Brother Francis as part of our family and their First Communion journey!

Here’s a description from their website:

Join Brother Francis in this delightfully inspirational and instructive presentation that teaches children all about the sacrament of the Eucharist!
This episode contains:

  • “The Last Supper”: animated presentation of Jesus instituting this blessed sacrament.
  • “The Story of Blessed Imelda Lambertini”: the Patroness of First Communicants
  • “I am the Bread of Life”, and “What More Can He Give”: two visualized songs
  • “Brother Francis: The Bread of Life” is an exceptional way to prepare children for their first Holy Communion.

So as I sat here typing this when my almost seven year old walks in and sees me and asked what I was doing.  I told him I was writing about how awesome we thought that Brother Francis DVDs are and he said, “well that’s special to me!”  He then said he wanted me to tell everyone this:  “Brother Francis is a great teacher!  I think he is a good guy who loves God very much.  He teaches about the Eucharist and that is super important.  The Eucharist is God and St. Imelda really wanted to receive Him.  I want to receive Him too and I’m very excited about my First Holy Communion coming soon!  It will be one of the BEST days of my life!  Thank you Brother Francis for teaching me the way!”  (That was word for word my friends of what he said, I need not say any more right?)  đź™‚

This mommy is happy that her kiddos are learning about the faith with Brother Francis!  đź™‚

Presidential Election 2012: This Homeschooling Dad Handicaps the Race

Someone I know online posited that Rick Santorum should be the person Catholics back in the 2012 presidential election, even going so far as to compare his name to the Holy of Holies as some sort of sign, while knocking Rick’s competitors. That elicited a response from me, which I’m turning into a post for the Head Mistress of our fair homeschool.

Regardless of the lady I know’s bazaar allusion to the Holy of Holies, the simple fact is that Rick Sanctorum has about as much a chance of winning as Michelle Bachmann or John Huntsman. And no, I labor under no miraculous delusions about politicians. (the poster said we need to believe in miracles)

Personally I prefer Ron Paul over any of them because he’s the only non-politician amongst them who would actually use the Presidency as a bully pulpit to turn this country away from the economic cliff it is heading towards.  Plus, he’s an Austrian School guy, and Tom Woods and Jeffrey Tucker are both traditional Catholics and Austrian School fellows at the Ludwig von Mises Institute at Auburn.

That said, Paul has no chance.  The core of the Republican party is petrified of his willingness to actually send the Federal government on a downward size and expenditure trajectory, which scares the military industrial complex to death, would try to remake drastically the financial services sector who are trying to bleed this country to death, would alienate him from just about every constituency at the Federal food trough, and sends all of the willing prostituted politicians needed to vote in REAL change running for the hills.  No one talks about Ron Paul, and never has.  Why? Just about every vested interest in the United States, liberal or conservative, is PETRIFIED of him.

SIDE NOTE ABOUT IGNORING PAUL: IT IS VERY CONSPICUOUS I MIGHT ADD. EVEN JON STEWART DOES SKETCHES ABOUT IT ON THE DAILY SHOW. EVERYONE HAS GONE OUT OF THEIR WAY IN POLITICS AND THE MEDIA TO ACT LIKE RON PAUL DOESN’T EVEN EXIST.

So let’s run down the field:

Rick Perry:
HORRIFIC debater… Obama would eat him alive. Reminds people of W too much.

Michelle Bachmann
Seen as a Tea Partier, and I’m not sure even she believes she has a chance now. She’s just playing out the string. And it doesn’t say much for that staffer who flipped from Backmann to Paul.  Out of the fire perhaps, but into the frying pan nonetheless.

John Huntsman
Smart. Too smart for people to want to engage in or support and isn’t quick witty or acerbic enough to take on fellow Repulbicans; much less Obama. He’s also a Mormon, which KILLS him and Romney amongst evangelicals and some Catholics (moi).

Back to Rick Sanctorum
No gravitas.  The fact that he has to state his credentials over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over only proves it. He does not have the ability to move people. He’s only getting a look see because people still don’t like Romney and Gingrich.

Newt Gingrich
Like Clinton, CLEARLY the smartest guy in the room.  I mean, by FAR.  Ron Paul is pretty smart but a behind in second.  Newt, though, is impetuous and outspoken.  His snarkiness scares the establishment because he has the ability to instantly pop off and alienate some group, only to have to backtrack and make amends.  It wouldn’t lend itself to being President either, though him versus Obama would be the race for Professor of the United States.  Newt still has more baggage than the Roman Army.  That he joined the Church and has a decent Catholic wife is good… it helps to neuter his past some. You can see this because he regularly mentions “look at what kind of person I am now” as a talking point.

Mitt Romney?
The money guy. The easy, safe choice. Being a Mormon makes him about as palatable to the Republican base as McCain was four years ago. Look how that turned out. Romney doesn’t believe in anything, which makes him perfect for the GOP, wall street and bankers, and the military industrial complex and major international corporate financiers and money men. He is a Republican version of Obama. No matter who wins between these two, nothing changes.

The economy still drives off a cliff when our debt service gets so large that the US gets severe downgrades and interest rates explode. No one that gets money from the government, or an entitlement, or corporate giveaways or loopholes, cares to keep the train from running off the cliff.  I guess American’s want to have a Greek standard of living.

So who do I think will win in 2012?

Probably Obama, unless Gingrich can snatch the nomination away from Romney, because Romney has a thin skin and will turn to Milquetoast when being debated against by Obama.  Obama will eat Romney’s lunch.

Should Gingrich manage to win the nomination, he is going to have to have more discipline than he has ever had in his life to beat Obama, and keep himself and his staff on track and on message.  He hasn’t shown he can do that so far. Good week… bad week… good week… bad week… you can’t do that and win the election.

Top Ten Most Visited RLS Posts in 2011

As the end of 2011 approached and I reflected upon the past year I wanted to set some goals for this blog.  To do so, as you would do in life, you look back and reflect on what happened.  With this in mind I wanted to see what YOU were interested in the most in 2011 to see what our audience is actually interested in vs. what I think you are interested in, lol.  If you have and use Google Analytics, then this is a pretty easy thing to do.  Now these posted were not necessarily written in 2011, they were just he ones that were most popular in this past year.  I will, however, have a separate post for just written in 2011, since our audience increased significantly this past year.  So here are the Top Ten Most Visited Raising {& Teaching}Little Saints Posts in 2011:

Help us now to forgive all the persons who consciously or unconsciously provoked this knot. Give them, also, the grace to forgive themselves for having provoked this knot. Only in this way can You undo it. Before You, dearest Mother, and in the name of Your Son Jesus, my Savior, who has suffered so many offenses, having been granted forgiveness, we pray they forgive these persons…and themselves, forever. We will live today practicing these virtues and offering you this as a sign of our love for You. We entrust into Your hands this knot (…describe) which keeps them from reflecting the glory of God.
